Self-catering in Knysna, Western Cape

Knysna is the heart of the Garden Route, built around a broad tidal lagoon that opens to the sea through the Heads — two sandstone cliffs you'll recognise from every postcard of the town. Self-catering accommodation here divides cleanly by geography, and where you stay shapes the whole trip. Get the side right and the lagoon becomes your back garden.

The lagoon side holds most of the stock. Thesen Islands is the standout — a residential marina development on a cluster of man-made islands, where canal-front houses and apartments come with their own moorings and a walk-to-the-restaurants location on Thesen Harbour Town. Leisure Isle, just across the water, is older, leafier and quieter: 1950s holiday houses on a flat island with a gentle tidal beach at Bollard Bay that's ideal for young families and stand-up paddling. Along Waterfront Drive and the town side you'll find apartments with lagoon views and an easy walk to the Knysna Waterfront. West of the lagoon, Brenton-on-Sea and Belvidere trade lagoon frontage for open-ocean beach and village calm.

The forest side is a different Knysna altogether. Rheenendal and the Elandskraal road climb into the indigenous Knysna forest — the cool, high-canopy woodland that inspired Dalene Matthee's novels. Self-catering here means cabins and cottages among the trees, close to the Garden of Eden, the big yellowwoods, and the mountain-bike and hiking trails around the forest edge. It's noticeably cooler in high summer and better suited to walkers, cyclists and birders than to beach days.

What most people come to do is get onto or across the water. The Featherbed Nature Reserve on the Western Head is reachable only by the ferry that leaves from the Waterfront — a guided reserve visit with an eco-boat crossing, and one of the few genuinely unmissable Knysna outings. Sunset cruises and the John Benn paddle-cruiser run the lagoon most evenings; kayaks, paddle boards and small boats launch from Thesen and Leisure Isle. Knysna oysters — farmed in the lagoon — are the local speciality, and the ten-day Knysna Oyster Festival in early July fills the town with runners, cyclists and, of course, oysters. If your dates overlap the festival, book six or more months ahead; rates climb and the good self-catering goes first.

Because nearly every listing here comes with a proper kitchen, self-catering suits the way Knysna actually works — a morning at the Thursday or weekend markets, fresh line fish or lagoon oysters brought back to cook, and long evenings on a deck watching the light change over the water. December to February is peak summer and books out early. September to November, and again in autumn, brings mild weather, thinner crowds and the best value on the lagoon.
